Canon EF 70-300mm lens

The EF 70-300mm lens is a telephoto zoom lens made by Canon Inc. The lens has an EF mount to work with the EOS line of cameras. Two Canon EF telephoto zoom lenses carry the 70-300mm designation. These are the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM and the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Both versions offer IS and USM and both have nearly the same maximum aperture of 4/4.5 to 5.6 over their entire focal range.

Seems good

I bought this lens to replace a similar EOS IS lens that had become faulty. I only use these lenses for wildlife shots. I have hardly used it so far. It does seem to give some good photos, but not always and I don't know why.
My previous two similar lenses were both good, but both developed faults after a few years and that remains a concern. I am happy with them while they work but as I only use them on a few occasions each year as a rule, I am not certain the limited survival rate is good. It could be me or the conditions on trips.

Image stabilisation (IS) alone is worth the money

I've bought this lens (used) to replace an old 75-300mm USM II and I do not regret it. This lens is sharper wide open, and the addition of IS make a huge difference. I was able to take pictures handheld at 300mm and in OK light (end of day) without blur, something impossible with my previous lens.
The construction is OK, not much different than the 75-300mm and there is a zomm lock (at 70mm) which is quite handy. My main grip is again the lack of ring USM, so the lens need to be use either manual or autofocus (no FTM) which is sometimes a bother, in particular at 300mm. But this is a highly recommended lens.

Great value

I use this lens all the time. Believe it or not it works pretty well in low lighting - because of the IS. Focus is not the best, especially at full zoom. It's excellent value for money (I've had it a long time and think I paid a lot more for it than it is now on Amazon) and I use it a lot. Not too heavy and no operational problems with it at all.

Canon Power

I purchased the EF 70-300mm lens through Amazon a few weeks ago, and so far I'm impressed, even though the dull winter weather has not permitted field tests in more favourable conditions.
The lens is solid, attractive, and has the benefit of an image stabilizer for those tricky hand-held shots of moving subjects, when a tripod is not suitable or available.
The only initial concern was the motor noise, although it isn't a real issue, and I'm already used to it.
Overall, I think that this is a first-class lens in this price range.

Good value for money

As you have probably already read this lens' focus can be a bit "soft" at 300mm, however below that up to about 250mm it is very sharp.
Initially it feels a bit heavy but you soon get used to the weight.
Being a "snapper" I like its quick auto focus and coupled with the linear stabilisation facility it is excellent for action shots.
