| A great lens! 31/08/2009 Beautifully sharp, vivid colours, this is a great, versatile lens. Takes a bit of getting used to if you usually use a twist zoom but after a while it becomes easy. No need to change lenses, I use this all day enabling me to get fantastic candids from a distance as well as wide shots. It's great for building up your muscles too! After a whole day's photography you certainly notice when you put it down! Highly recommended! By Linsey O'Neill Poole, UK | ||||||
| Need bodybuilding course as "extra"!! 25/05/2009 Optically very good. There are two drawbacks, firstly the weight of it, secondly, the zoom slide adjustment tends to slip. By Dr. A. G. M. Johnson | ||||||
| Excellent all round lens 21/11/2008 I had been looking for some time for a lens that could be used in most situations, was fast, had good image stabilization and excellent optics. After reading many reviews, I decided upon this lens. Although it is expensive and heavy, I believe it is well worth the money. It is very solidly built and simple to use. I have used it for sports photography and social events, and the images were exceptional. It has now replaced most of my lenses. It can take a little while to focus indoors in poor lighting, but it is not that bad. I am now using it with a Manfrotto 679B monopod for sports photography, as it can become heavy on the arms after a while. I love this lens and unlike my other lenses, would never leave it behind. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good all purpose lens. By Michael Punch Limerick, Ireland | ||||||
| Perfect for travelling 07/08/2008 Although very expensive, very niticeable, and very heavy, this is the perfect lens to take if you're going on holiday - particularly if you either don't want to (or can't) take other lenses, or if you're going to be in situations where you need to switch between wide shots and telephoto shots rapidly... and particularly where changing lenses would be hazardous to the health of the lenses and the camera! I bought one for a trek up Kilimanjaro followed by a safari - it was heavy, but there was no way that I could carry different lenses, and no way that I could have swapped lenses on and off. This was the perfect compromise. Image quality is good, although if you're a "pixel peeper" then you may see artefacts that you don't like and wouldn't see on a shorter-range zoom or a prime lens - but you have to compromise somewhere. It's not particularly wonderful in low light (especially as the aperture is not constant at the two ends of the zoom range) but the image stabiliser does help somewhat to eliminate shake; the focussing is otherwise pretty fast and accurate. Mine has lived on my 5D for a substantial amount of time since buying it, purely because it's so convenient when you're on walkabout; the main downside is that it makes you lazy - and in effect turns your kit into an expensive point-and-shoot camera! Highly recommended if you have the money and expect to be in situations where the versatility is essential. By Mark P. British Isles | ||||||
| Questions to buyers 13/06/2007 The reviews sound great, but the fact that this is 28mm wide angle will mean that this will convert to 40mm in digital giving a more narrow angle of view, nevertheless the quality is obviously outstanding. The reason for this review or question is to make my understanding of photography better. Any other opinions with regard to my review would be welcome. H By Elvis Pressley | ||||||
