| Quality in abundance! 25/01/2010 I have had this lens for over a year now. Initially on a 450D (what?? you might say) which performed very well but on a full frame 5D mk ii this baby truly shines! The images are sharp the colour rendition is amazing. The focal lenght is just perfect. I have few Canon L lenses: 17-40mm f4, 100mm f2.8 IS and the 135mm f2. They all have their strengths but this is my favourite. Not quite my work horse (that would be my 17-40) but it never fail to wow me everytime I give it a bit of air-time. It is hard to learn initially. The focusing is a bit slow compared to my fast performers but then again you know that already if you are considering this. It is great at 1.2 even better stopped down to 1.6 or even 1.8, dependent on what you want of course. With the 5D you might want to MA (micro-adjust) did that few times but but I always ended up going to 0 adjustment. I realised then it was my technique that needed improving rather than this wonder of a lens. My advice is not to rent it because you'll want it even more. Sure it's not as versatile as a 70-200 2.8 for wedding portraiture but stunning images at shallow DOF is something else. The L lens craving is an addiction (curse you Canon!) but secretly I pray that they keep giving us wonderful products. My next target is the 24mm 1.4L mk ii. Should be great for indoor/night-time shots. By jamsari | |||||
| Delays 21/02/2009 This item like most items I have bought from Amazon but supplied by a third party took a long time to arrive. I do not expect an item ordered on line to take 2 weeks to arrive. Efficient companies that I have dealt with direct supply items that arrive within 20 hours. In consequence of the above I now check carefully when ordering from Amazon to see whether a third party supplier is involved; if they are I do not deal with Amazon over that item. It is easy enough to find those that supply direct. By John K. Bonell Eastbourne | |||||
| A lens with a lot of (asperical) bottle 04/11/2007 Opened the sealed box - lens in hand - panic - manual focus DOES NOT WORK! Later after phone call to Canon - agree to try it on camera body first and then decide if it needs to go back for repair. Back home - connected to my EOS 40D and - voila! - the lens comes to life. It appears that the manual focus actually uses the USM rather than a mechanical connection so the lens needs to be powered. Finally found an obscure reference in the instructions confirming this. I really feel that as this lens is different to the usual Canon lenses, then Canon should emphasise this in their documentation and inform their telephone support staff - ah well. As to the lens performance - this one certainly sets the standard. Colour (chromatic) abberation is non existant, barrel and pincushion distortion undetectable, viginetting is nearly zero and the resolution probably exceeds the sensor resolution (10.1 Mpix) on the EOS40D (APS C sensor). Great for portraits but even better for isolating flowers from their background foliage. Very pleasing bokeh due to the circular apperture. All in all an excellent lens once you read the instructions carefully. By Mr. Roderick Peel Solihull, UK | |||||
| Killer Glass 06/12/2006 This has to be one of the ultimate bits of glass on the planet. Ultra precise, gorgeous falloff ratios, a range of DoF that is just about second to none. The only bad thing about it? Er... it makes life too easy. By P. WHITE UK | |||||
