Canon EF 200mm lens

The EF 200mm USM lens is a L-series prime telephoto lenses made by Canon Inc. for the EOS line of cameras. Three 200mm prime were made: f/1.8, two f/2.8, and the most recent f/2.0. The 200 mm f/1.8 lens, introduced in November 1988, is an extremely fast telephoto lens, the fastest 200mm ever produced. It is a large off-white lens with rear drop-in filter tray. Production was discontinued in 2004. A replacement, the Canon EF 200mm f/2 IS USM was announced 15 October 2007. The 200 mm f/2.8 lens is an inexpensive long prime. The first model, introduced in December 1991, had a built-in hood. It was superseded by the 'mark II' and discontinued in March 1996. The mark II is similar to first model but with standard bayonet hood, and is still in production. These lenses are Canon's second least expensive L-series lens behind the Canon EF 70-200mm lens f/4.0 zoom L-series lens. It exceeds the Canon EF 70-200mm lens f/2.8 in optical quality by a slight margin, and is significantly cheaper, lighter and less conspicuous, but at the expense of the ability to zoom, and of the Image stabilizer. It sports a ring USM allowing full time manual focusing. Focusing can be made down to 1.5 metre. The 200 mm f/2.0, introduced in April 2008, comes as a successor for the discontinued high-hand 200 mm f/1.8. It is a large off-white lens with a rear drop-in filter tray and an 'Image Stabilizer'. All the lenses are compatible with the Canon Extender EF teleconverters. When used on a digital EOS body with a crop factor of 1.6x, they provide a field of view equivalent to 320mm mounted on a film body, making them very compact long telephoto lens.

A Photographer's Dream

09/02/2009

I have had this lens for over a year now and feel I am well aquainted with it enough to give it a review.
The first thing you notice is the size and weight. Heavy(ish) yes, but built to last, very solid. The image quality is superb, as you would expect from an 'L' lens. Auto-focussing is amazing, both quick and crisp. Colour representation is excellent, in fact I have not seen better. Believe it or not this also makes for a great portrait lens as you have to be some distance away from the subject in order to frame the photograph, this allows the subject to feel a lot more relaxed, thus creating a more natural image. This is especially useful at weddings when you want those special candid shots where the subject is unaware of what you are doing. Sometimes these shots make the wedding.
I like to use my 2x extender giving me a 400mm lens whilst retaining autofocus. The focussing speed is very slightly slowed down by using the extender, but not enough to cause any real problems. I use this combination photographing birds, both stationery and in flight and have had some excellent results.
Photographing people (without)the extender gives clear crisp and colourful images - then again every 'L' lens I have tried does this anyway.
As with any fixed lens, the photographer has to move in order to get what they really want, but surely this is what photography is all about.
I have no hesitation in recommending this lens to any photographer, especially if you want to take your photography onto the next level.

I bought this product for my wife who does professional photography and from the feedback I heard from her she thought it was great and it's visible in the photos as well.

a fine telephoto

I had one of these lenses ten years ago when I worked for a newspaper. It wasn't an f/2.8 L II, it was the version before. This one is so much nicer. It has auto focus. I don't believe my other did. I wasn't shooting digital. It took great shots though. Sporting events were were cool to shoot with that, and I'm sure this lenses. I really dug shooting high school basketball and volleyball games. The ability to "get in close" to the action is a real plus with this lens. The only fault is no is. But I guess the money issue is the big concern. But like I said, this is a number one lens.

Amazing Lens For The Price

14/06/2010

I rented this lens for use with my Canon XSI (450D) and it was flawless. The images I got from this lens were not comparable to the ones I get from any of my EF-S lenses. The build quality is superb as well as the Auto-Focus. The Auto-Focus was always there when i needed it, since it has USM auto focus its extremely fast. The colors from the images were beautiful they had excellent saturation and contrast. I used this lens for Track, Tennis and Portraits and it performed extremely well. The only thing that I did not like about the lens was NO IS but that can be expected from its very affordable price.

Canon ef 200mm f/2.8L II

18/12/2009

The only reason I have this lens is better picture quality than any zoom in this price range and more. Forget the entire Canon "non L" zooms. They produce muddy non vivid pictures. With the good lighting condition zooms are fine, but any $200 camera can make OK pictures in the good day.
And there is something more to this L lens; I mean better consistency of sharpness and skin colors. You know those nasty reddish skin colors. Not with this lens. Less work on Photoshop.

Not as convenient as zoom?

OK. The next level is.... white Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.
F/2 and IS (Image Stabilization) versus f/2.8 and no image stabilization.
Sharpness level is the same. Any price difference? You check yourself, you will be surpized.
