Canon EF 100mm lens

The EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens is a prime lens made by Canon Inc. It is of the EF lens mount that fits the EOS camera system. There are two versions, the original and a second one that has a USM autofocus motor. It is a macro lens, meaning that it is capable of reproducing an object the size of the image sensor, known as 1:1 magnification. Despite the macro designation, the lens can focus to infinity like regular lenses. As such, it is appropriate for use as a portrait lens. This lens can be used with an extension tube, which increases the maximum magnification to 1.19x (EF 12 II) or 1.39x (EF 25 II). In these cases, focusing at infinity is sacrificed, with maximum distance reduced to 1002mm (3.3') and 606mm (2,0') respectively. Aside from the macro feature, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro stands out among the 80 or so Canon EF lenses for its resolution and contrast.

Stunning results

21/08/2010

A photographer friend of mine told me that lenses are possibly a more important investment than the body. Some lens designs have been around for 30 years but still fit today's latest DSLR models. I'm new to digital photography so I was hoping that investing nearly as much on a lens as I did on the body would be a good move - and it was. I bought this for my new Canon 550D/2Ti Rebel and I'm stunned at the results. If Macro photography is something that particularly interests you then without a doubt buy this lens. Images are sharp and at maximum aperture (f/2.8) the depth of field is a millimter - perfect for capturing the beady eye of a bug while throwing the rest out of focus! Great also for Plant portraits and human portraits. It is quite heavy (due to the internal glassware) which gives it a reasuringly well-made feel.

Canon 100mm macro-lens

This lens is excellent. I was a little worried when this lens arrived as to how easy it would be to use, however I was soon very pleased with my new close up photos. I have only just started using an SLR but wanted to get into macrophotography as part of my growing new passion. This lens is just what I hoped for, it is easy to use and gives good results with litte need of a vast understanding of the intricate details. I am sure with further practise I will learn more and get even better results. Thoroughly recommended. It did arrive a bit late. I have uploaded a couple of shots of dandelion heads that I took in the back garden using my camera (Canon 50D) and this lens only.

Wonderful lens

I just love this lens and I wouldn't be without it. Images are sharp and autofocus works well even at f2.8. Background blur, colour and contrast are all beautiful.

This is actually a really versatile lens - don't be put off by the "macro" designation - you don't just have to use it for macros - i've actually found myself using this lens for portraits and the end results are wonderful.

For macro work, you won't be disappointed. It captures every single detail - you'll see things you've never noticed before.

You do need good light when you're working close up but however you decide to use this lens you will not be disappointed by the results.

Well Worth Considering For A Macro Lens

100mm and similar macro lens are ideal for dipping into the world on the small side. They allow you to capture macro shots without having to get as close to your subject as you would have to with lesser 50mm lens. They are therefore ideal for taking detailed and sharp photographs of bugs and insects as well as other nature photography. Despite the name however they are not confined to only macro photography. They can also be very useful for portraiture as a larger aperture allows you to isolate your subject in perfect clarity while having the background blurred.

In terms of picture quality the Canon can't be faulted as time after time it produce razor sharp and vibrant images with the perfect level of contrast. It's quick to respond and the autofocus is very fast. It's also worth noting that the auto focus mode got it spot on in every shot I tried, allowing for minimal fuss and having to spend time composing the photo manually (while it does give you a manual option should you desire it.) You would never have to worry about chromatic aberration, or lens distortion with this Canon, and it seems capable of capturing exactly what I wanted in it's first attempt.

The build quality is excellent and while the lens only comes with a one year warranty I imagine that it could easily withstand some harsh conditions. Though the lens is a bit bulky and not the lightest lens I've held I quickly became accustomed to it.

The autofocus motor is almost silent in operation again making the lens ideal for photographing bugs without disturbing them.

I was surprised to find that the lens performed so well in low light conditions, even without using a flash ring, noise on images were minimal (shooting in RAW mode).

The biggest disappointment was the lack of an image stabilizer in the lens. My own Nikon 105mm macro wasn't much more expensive than this lens and comes with vibration reduction (as well as having a nano crystal coating). To be honest I missed having the option to use it should I need to.

However, overall as a macro lens it does exactly what it's designed to do and it does it well.

I personally find this Canon lens to be a bit on the expensive side considering the lack of image stabilization. There are more expensive macro lens on the market, but at the same time there are significantly cheaper lens such as the Tamron SP AF 90mm Di Macro, which comes in at only £325. The Tamron seems to get a lot of glowing reviews on a number of sites, so I would recommend investigation all possibilities before splashing out.

Excellent for the price

I rate this lens very highly.

Considering myself to be a macro photographer by trade, this lens performs as well, if not better, than some other more expensive lenses out on the market.

I have used it with my Canon 350D for some time now and it delivers consistently the results required for my style of work.

Its weight alone suggests that it has a good quality build and the glass used is very precise. I enjoy making use of the very slim depth of field achievable with its wide f/2.8 aperture limit. See my website for some examples.

Certainly need to use a tripod or some other way of stabilising, especially for insect and floral macro shots, as hand held it can be a little on the heavy side to keep steady for any length of time, like when waiting for breezes to die down.

Almost always use the Canon ET67 Lens Hood for EF100mm f2.8 Macro USM with this lens, for shade and as a rest when shooting very close along surfaces.

This lens also get a regular run-out for my pet portraits as it offers such pin-sharp results. I really do get on like a house on fire with this lens, thoroughly recommended by me.
