Canon EF 100mm lens

The EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens is a prime lens made by Canon Inc. It is of the EF lens mount that fits the EOS camera system. There are two versions, the original and a second one that has a USM autofocus motor. It is a macro lens, meaning that it is capable of reproducing an object the size of the image sensor, known as 1:1 magnification. Despite the macro designation, the lens can focus to infinity like regular lenses. As such, it is appropriate for use as a portrait lens. This lens can be used with an extension tube, which increases the maximum magnification to 1.19x (EF 12 II) or 1.39x (EF 25 II). In these cases, focusing at infinity is sacrificed, with maximum distance reduced to 1002mm (3.3') and 606mm (2,0') respectively. Aside from the macro feature, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro stands out among the 80 or so Canon EF lenses for its resolution and contrast.

First L lens and completely blown away!

27/07/2010

I bought this lens as a replacement for my ageing EF-S 60mm macro as i intend going full-frame fairly soon. I decided to buy it after reading the numerous reviews on the American Amazon website.

I bought this lens from Jessops after they offered a very competitive price and i always prefer playing before paying. On the first trip out to a canal in Surrey i was completely blown away with the quality of images and colour saturation you get - even with my limited experience/patience. The lens is fairly weighty but balanced very well that it doesn't feel heavy when handheld for a couple of hours. I was amazed by the sharpness of the images and seeing individual hairs on a spider leg or a wasp with a cool black mohicans. The extra 40mm zoom over my old lens lets me keep my distance from those nervous insects.

The multitide of switches takes some getting used to especially as this is my first IS lens. The 2.8 aperture at 100mm is razor thin and bokeh is dream-like with gorgeous circular swirls. I've only used this so far as a macro lens, but it seems perfectly suited to portraits also - best when mated to a full frame sensor.

You get what you pay for

I bought this lens mostly for portraiture but I've just turned in the most amazingly sharp pictures of Dragonflies hatching I think I've ever seen. No credit to me I'd add (ok...just a bit of credit then). I did consider the non-IS, non-L series version, but having moved up to a 5d MkII recently I thought I'd push the boat out and stick to the real McCoy. Am I glad I did? no question. This lens is so sharp. Believe me. It comes with a caveat though...if you're prepared to work hard at depth of field issues (this lens exploits limited DOF) and be really accurate with focussing, you'll reap the benefits. If you're lazy though...save a few quid and buy the other one. Razor sharp throughout (but I'd keep away from the smaller apertures), this superb lens will not disappoint, and it will add a new dimension to "creative" use of DOF. My only criticism is that it's not quite as chunky as some other L series lenses. If you're used to the "hewn from solid metal" feel of the usual ones you'll be a bit disappointed when you remove it from the packaging, but maybe all that weight isn't necessary? maybe Canon have realised that it's not needed. Is the IS useful? for an extra couple of stops of course it is, but that shouldn't be the reason you've chosen this lens...that will be because it's got the red ring around the barrel. Sell the car, send the wife out to work, do whatever you need to if you really NEED this lens. But don't hesitate. Just shop around.

Canon 100mm f2.8L IS - Great Macro Lens

31/08/2010

I was lucky to test some macro lens and i found that this lens is the best of them all. Not only you can get really up close to your subject but you can also use this lens as portrait lens. The cost of the lens is pretty high but i think it is worth the cost.

2. IS

I had the old 100mm macro before I bought this one
never looked back!

It is so good that I can not express how much I love it.

If you are still debating about which one to get, I warn you that this is the one to get. Otherwise, you will still be thinking about upgrading!
