| OVERPRICED 19/08/2009 This item is £1000 over priced. If you don't believe me check around for yourselves. Otherwise it is a good cam for the time, outdated now though. By Nicholas Bradley | ||||||
| After three years of ownership... 02/08/2009 I purchased this camera from a well-known chain of professional camera stores about three years ago. Initially I was disappointed the battery grip from my older 10D didn't fit, but then the 20D is a smaller camera! I find the 20D easier to hold when fitted with the Canon BG-E2 grip, so this stays on at all times. Picture quality is an improvement over the 10D, as is flash control. I have a Canon Speedlite 550EX which is compatible with both the 10D and 20D, so I never use the integral flash on either camera...Currently I see no need to upgrade to a newer model... | My second Canon camera is awesome! 23/07/2007 I have used a Canon G5 for the past 3 years, and have used my 20d for the last 15 months, it has to be the best purchase yet. I find the the extra battery grip BG-E2 helps with the balance when using my 24-70mm f2.8 lens, as well as it having the extra battery and controls neatly placed where you need them. I am amazed at the lowlight ability the camera has, as I often shoot without flash indoors and with or without a tripod I have got some awesome shots. Also to underline its simplicity I have had my 2 daughters use it on two separate birthday celebrations to shoot many shots, 370 between us all! They were celebrating their 18th and 14th birthdays, and they both were able to shoot some great shots on AF without the need to go to AUTO. I am sure with some more practice they both could feel confident to go manual, as the 24-70 does have an excellent sweet-spot with manual focusing. I also recommend, get as much memory as you can afford (I use 1x4gb 2x2gb Scandisk extreme III and still come very close to filling them) and the best glass you can afford, and if possible the fastest as well. F1.2 for close work gives some amazing DOF possibilities, and if you use a long Prime or zoom then F4 will give some great results, especially if you have image stabilisation which will ensure sharp shots are possible. If you have not got one yet.....go and find one! By Stephen Narramore London, United Kingdom | ||||||
| It is just fantastic 19/12/2006 I have had this camera since they first came out over a year (or is it two even now?). During the first shoot I used it on, not even having read the manual, I got shots worthy of competition wins. It handled action shots, sunsets over the gulf coast of Florida and some nice village scenes back in the UK. It has been used out of fast ribs (boats) in the Solent getting drenched with sea spray, bumped around various boats and each and every time is has performed and faultlessly under the harshest conditions I could imagine. This is a piece of kit worthy of the title "An all time great camera" It has been a pleasure to use. I use a tiny canon to go to parties with for snaps, but for everything else this is the camera to have and I don't think the 30D which is now out has that much extra to offer (although it too will be a great camera too of course) One tiny niggle is that the built in flash's sensor doesn't always pop up to let the camera know that the flash is up and it thinks it is jammed down giving you an error 05. This is apparently a commonish problem. Initially cleaning around it solved it but the pop up lever for the sensor seems pretty stuck down now so it's off to Canon for a service. Having said that given the conditions I have been using it under it is a wonder that is all that has gone wrong. The camera has been so wet at times with salt water that it needed drying off on a T shirt. It did result in some of the greatest boat action shots ever though jumping through the air spray everywhere in crisp clear form. The camera is very versatile and capable of any type of photography you may wish to carry out. If you order make sure you get an extra 2gb CF card though as you will soon want it when you get snap happy! I use a sigma lens 28 - 300 which allows me plenty of shooting options it is AF but not image stabilised which on the boat results in the odd dodgy shot. That said it is a few hundred cheaper and has been a great lens all round so I would recommend getting that or something similar - forget the standard lens get the body only and a zoom. The sigma fits in a camera bag and or my large bum bag too which the big zooms dont do. If you haven't got yours yet - why not?! you are missing out! By Paul Duffield London UK | ||||||
| Amazing piece of kit. 22/03/2006 The 20D has to be equal or probably better than anything in it's class, personally I don't go amateur /professional, if you have the cash and you want one then definately get one regardless of whether you are new to DLR's or a pro. Ignore the elitist's out there as this camera is very easy to understand, and you will be taking some amazing shots in no time at all, I wouldn't say the body is heavy I would rather say it's very well made, and like other reviewers would recommend as much memory as you can afford as once you get snapping you won't know when to stop. The controls are very easy to adjust whilst composing the shot such as exposure/flash compensation and the pop up flash although limited will do a job,(usually as much as a full stop extra I have found) but I reckon will be used for mainly fill in during daylight hours. A battery grip is also very important if you need to add extra lens such as telephoto's (fast ones are very heavy) as the grip gives balance, another fantastic add on is the 580EX flash unit giving basic studio results with no fuss at all. Even with the new 30D body out now, the 20D should not be ignored as it is around £300 cheaper especially if you're not bothered about a bigger screen. One piece of advice though IMHO is to get as good a lens as you can afford to get the benefit from this body, something like a 24-105mm f4L walkabout or 24-75mm f2.8L then you WILL see some amazing results even if you are a beginner.
