Canon EOS 300D

The Canon EOS 300D, manufactured by Canon marketed in North America as the EOS Digital Rebel and in Japan as the EOS Kiss Digital, is a 6.3-megapixel entry-level digital single-lens reflex camera. It was initially announced on 20 August, 2003 at a price point of $899 without lens, $999 with the "kit" lens. It is part of the Canon EOS line of cameras. This was a significant milestone in digital cameras, as it was the first digital SLR offered under $1000. The 300D polycarbonate bodies were originally available in silver color only, whereas the Japanese version was also available in black. Later, black versions of the 300D were also released in the US and Europe.

not for windows 7 users (yet)

24/01/2010

The camera itself is superb as everyone says, however, when I recently upgraded to windows 7 I discovered that the driver was not compatible and Canon are not issuing an upgrade. Fortunately nothing of importance on the camera but to say I was annoyed and upset is putting things mildly! I don't understand Canons attitude on this, a simple matter surely to update drivers? If I do buy another digital camera it is unlikely to be a canon (but I'm looking at my trusty old Minolta 7000i, years old, still going strong, will never go out of date and takes brilliant pics). Anyway, IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A USED DIGITAL SLR BE AWARE OF POSSIBLE DRIVER PROBLEMS
UPDATE. I've been in touch with canon and this is what they have to say ..........
We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience but indeed Microsoft Windows 7 software has not yet been released for your EOS 300D. You may try the Microsoft Windows Vista drivers as they may but equally may not work, this is something Canon however cannot support due to possible compatibility issues. Canon is developing the new drivers, but I cannot inform you when the drivers will be released as we do not have such information.

Canon EOS300D DigSLR from Cameras-4-u

18/07/2009

I've bought from many places in the past, but Cameras-4-u are simply the best. After an initial aberrant choice, I decided to take up an offer of an exchange. It was all completed within three days. I then had problems getting the computer to recognize the digital camera, but I was given prompt advice that was perfect, and solved the problem without the need to do anything else such as purchasing a USB 'Card'. The retailer is the one of the most pleasant person I have ever bought anything from, because he is so dedicated to everything to do with cameras! The actual camera is wonderful, and is dead easy to use in AUTO setting. I therefore wish to 'graduate' onto manual settings to get the best out of my camera, and this, for me, was the best entry level SLR I could have bought in terms of quality and price. I look forward to editing my photos which are of a high quality (not due to me, but the camera!) on Adobe Photoshop too! Sorry, but I am very excited!

Fantastic entry-level Digital SLR Camera

20/07/2007

I've had a 300D for over two years and it is a fantastic bit of kit. Very flexible, an excellent 18-55mm lens, and great quality pictures.

Occasionally in auto-focus mode it focuses on the wrong spot and I don't notice, but that is a minor complaint. My only other observation is that in sport mode it can't take that many shots in a row and I suspect it can't take full advantage of the higher speed CompactFlash cards although I use 4Gb cards happily in mine.

You can't go wrong with this if you want an entry level digital SLR. 6.3Mpixels seem a bit small in this day and age but you won't notice unless you're planning to print A2 or above...

300d

11/09/2005

Have had this camera since it came out, overall its good. I have 2 major issues with this camera though. Firstly build quality: The whole thing has a very plasticy feel to it, it creeks and clicks when you pick it up (its not exactly light!), when compared to the nikon d70 or the Canon 10d the 300d feels quite cheap. Secondly the picture quality isnt consistant: Sometimes the images are very clear and sometimes they are very soft and lack contrast, it also tends to under expose so you find your self having to add several stops of light to compensate. The camera seems to struggle to to take sharp pictures with large telephotos lenses, I have a 135-400mm semi pro sigma lens and it just refuses to take nice sharp pictures. At the lower end the pictures are much better, mainly good sharp images, I have a Canon 24-85 lens which I bought in place of the Canon lens which its provided with (which was a very low quality lens). The camera is very good in doors, using it on Aperature Priority on a tripod in low light levels the pictures are billiant. The auto white balance is very good you never have to adjust it, it always gets it right. As an amateur camera it is very good (dont forget that it is very bulky and heavy!) Just make sure you have a decent lens to put on it.

A superb camera

18/05/2005

I waited over two years to take the step to digital, carefully comparing reviews and prices on all manufacturers and specifications. I finally opted for the Cannon EOS 300D because it's discontinuance brought it into an affordable bracket for a digital SLR and also my old 35mm Canon had served me well for over a decade (plus the fact that my existing lenses etc also fit the EOS 300D). The familiar body feel and sturdy construction feels far more comfortable than the tiny models with minute buttons and dials.

What a camera! The ease of operation is a doddle even for a novice like myself, and the resulting photographs are of amazing quality...dare I say professional? As well as the point and shoot functions the camera offers so much scope to experiment with creative photography. I have experimented and produced images I would never have believed possible with my previous camera. And if I mess it up?...no problem...just scrap it.

If you can find one of these cameras, buy it! I doubt whether it's replacement has additional features worth the extra money. Battery life is excellent but it is worth purchasing the largest memory card you can afford (there isn't one included with the package) to explore the true potential of this groundbraking camera.
