Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S Zoom-Nikkor

The 55-200mm AF-S lens is a medium telephoto zoom lens manufactured by Nikon for use on Nikon DX format digital SLR cameras. It comes in two variants: 55-200mm F 4-5.6G ED AF-S DX, released in 2005 55-200mm F 4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR DX, released in 2007, adds internal focusing (IF) and, most notably, vibration reduction (VR). Like all lenses in the DX format, the 55-200mm casts a smaller image circle than lenses for full-frame 35mm cameras and is therefore only compatible with cameras having APS-C-sized sensors (or vignetting will result). Nikon introduced the 55-200mm in 2005 and refreshed it in 2007. As an inexpensive, compact, and lightweight telephoto, it complements the D40 and D60 entry level digital SLR cameras Nikon brings to market. Photozone noted the newer VR model has a better build quality than the earlier non-VR model. Ken Rockwell praised its sharpness and performance and said it was a bargain compared to other lenses in the same focal length range. Similarly, Thom Hogan praised its value and optical performance, but criticized its handling, noting a stiff zoom ring, diminutive focus ring, and difficulty switching to manual focus. Because the lens has a completely plastic body, including the mount, it is much more fragile, but much lighter, than traditional lenses of comparable size and capability.

Really good lens

Really good lens. Do what it is meant to do, it's a good average lens, you will not have the quality of a £2,000 lens, but to follow the 18-55 DX VR, it's the perfect choice.

Great value VR lens and a Nikon!

I have wanted a VR lens for my Nikon D70s SLR for some time, but I could not justify the cost until this lens came available at a price I could afford.
The lens is not too heavy and quite compact. It has given some good results in use, the VR system works well and gives about a 3 to 4 stop advantage over a conventional lens. In practice, this means that I can use this lens at 200 mm without a tripod, thus one less item of kit to carry around.
The only downside, is that this lens has a plastic mount, rather than the metal mount fitted to my other Nikon lenses, however as an recreational photographer, I doubt this will present any issues for me, and is compensated by the excellent optics and speed of focusing, which makes this lens fantastic value for money.
It arrived quickly and was well packed

A good addition to the standard lens kit

24/05/2010

After reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided to plump for the 55-200mm lens to compliment the 18-55mm lens that came with the D3000 camera kit.

I have only taken a number of shots this evening, and I am pleased with the results so far (certainly for the outdoors shots at full zoom). Indoor shots were a mixed bag, but that's not really what the lens was designed for.

The lens feels 'nice' to hold and is weighted perfectly. All in all, it is a perfect companion for the 18-55mm kit for those who are keen on photography but can't afford to break the bank.

Thumbs up

Arrived on time and well packaged. Good value for money and takes great clear pictures. If your wanting really close up pictures of animals/bees/spiders however, you may want to invest in a more expensive macro lens. Overall though, a great inexpensive lens.

Good lens for travelling

I have used this lens on a trip to prague with my Nikon D3000 and I found the lens easy to change and use and compact to carry around all day in a Lowpro slingshot, obviously any lens that has a range of uses also has its limitations but I could not fault this lens for what it is designed to achieve.
