Sigma 70–300mm f/4–5.6 APO DG Macro lens

The Sigma 70–300mm lens is a consumer-level, telephoto zoom lens made by Sigma Corporation. Different versions of this lens are produced that work with cameras from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Konica Minolta, Sony and Sigma. Additionally, Olympus' 70–300 f/4–5.6 lens for Four-Thirds has the same optical design and specifications as this lens. The lens is packaged with a lens hood and carrying case. This version of the lens replaces the 70–300mm f/4–5.6 DG MACRO, which is a non-apo lens. The manufacturer's APO designation signifies the use of low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberration. The apo version has a red ring on the end of the lens body to distinguish it from the earlier version. This lens has 14 elements in 10 groups including two special low dispersion glass elements in the front lens group, and one in the rear lens group. The non-apo version has only one such element in the front. An additional feature to this lens is a macro option between 200–300mm. The minimum focusing distance between 200 and 300mm is 95cm (37.4 inches). It is enabled by a manual switch and provides a maximum magnification of 1:2. The red ring version (APO) is generally considered to be the sharpest version of this lens. A version with built-in focusing motor drive is available for Nikon digital cameras (AF-D).

Unbeatable value

Had this a few weeks now, not found any flaws with it (yet). Went for the APO over the plain AF on recommendation from a local camera shop, who were charging more for a second hand one than Amazon were charging for brand new. Can't fault the value for money.

Works OK freehand, but without wanting to state the obvious it is much better with a tripod and remote. That said, the image stabilisation is very good.

Would definitely buy Sigma again, and if you are considering going for the plain AF, don't. Spend a few more quid and get the APO.

Shipped very quickly to Guernsey also - top marks to Amazon.

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? Not a lot.

Overall, everything about this lens is well above average, though in no aspect excellent- except the price tag.
You could spend a whole lot more for a whole lot less, and if you're considering this against Nikon's own ED or G 70-300's - don't even waste your time - this lens is far superior (yes, I have had the opportunity to use them both too).

To correct the moans about the macro 'sticking' - it doesn't, these comments are made by people who don't know how to use the lens.
It is 'quirky' - but the limitation of the macro at long end of the zoom helps this lens achieve excellent (and close) macro results.

my 3rd lens.....my arsenal is complete...for now

Came promptly.Nice looking lens although does seem odd at first when fully zoomed out.Pictures are good in certain light....know your lens as if you want better be prepared to spend a whole lot more. Can take a while to focus in on subjects at 200mm plus and in poor light but for this price i can ignore that. Its quite heavy but on my a 200 i can tell when im shaking and i fire off snaps on continuous so i'll get my shot eventually. The macro element is a nice extra but again focusing takes even longer so a tripod is necessary but if you fancy trying macro this will let you in the frount door so to speak.Like i said the pictures are good and the lens is versatile but dont expect them to be better than your fixed 50mm.I now have this, the kit lens and a 50mm sony 1.8 for gorgous close ups and group shots.Im also getting a jack of all trades 50-200mm as its a walkabout lens so if im not sure which lens i will need i have this ubber versatile weopon at my dispossol. The sigma apo 70-300 also came in a lovly free belt bag which is padded and also has a free lens shroud to keep the glare off at that critical time.I have taken some smashing sunsets at perranporth beach with this and i feel weirdly quite a pro with it as it looks the biz.200 quid or less...its a steal and well worth a look. The sony version has more quirks and far more potential picture killing purple fringing than this model and the apo sigma does give better shots than the cheaper spec of the same model.Buy it...learn it and you wont be dissapointed.

Sigma Zoom lems

The Sigma 70mm - 300mm APO lens I ordered arrived quickley and was just what I expected. I bought this lens to go with my Canon DSLR 450D camera. I was supprised by the build quality of the lens for the momey I paid. Using the lens is a delight although the macro switch is a bit fiddly to change back from macro to normal as it appears to stick, but this is a minor point. My photos were clear and crisp.

Sigma lens

Lens is basically sound. Reasonable image quality, excellent for the price. I don't notice the noise on auto fcous mentioned on other reviews and the speed of autofocus is good (onlyused in an an outdoor setting); the noise is there certainly but not an issue. My only slight niggle is the macro button. When selecting macro the button slides easily, getting out of macro to normal photography might take twenty attempts until the button releases.
