The technique of “photo stitching” has been around a while, and was used even in traditional or analogue photography, albeit in a crude way. In the past, photos were stitched together using transparent tape. Today, in the digital world, computers do the work, but the idea is still the same. The technique consists of taking several overlapping pictures and editing them with computer software (known as post processing) to obtain a single panorama covering up to 360 degrees. Some compact cameras have an integrated feature which achieves the same effect without the need for post-processing. But in order to achieve the highest quality, you often need to do it yourself.

If you’ve ever seen those waterfall photographs where it’s bright daylight but the water appears to be flowing smoothly as if the shutter speed is very slow, you’re probably looking at a photo taken with a neutral density filter over the lens. They basically darken the scene allowing for a longer shutter speed to be used when there is still bright sunlight. Graduated neutral density filters are also popular. GND filters darken part of a scene, e.g. a bright sky, allowing a more even illumination throughout the picture. London has many great locations to take a decent photograph. After a day of exploring London I’ve put together a collection of some of the best places and example photos taken at each location.
I used a Canon 1DS Mark 1 digital SLR, with a Canon 17-40mm L lens for the majority of photos, I also used a tripod which was very handy once it started getting dark. It’s possible to balance a camera on flat surfaces a lot of the time, however this isn’t always the case.

This includes: How to take photos in low light, how to take photos with both the subject and the background brightly illuminated, how to take photos of moving objects (traffic lights at night) and how to take photos of lights (the bokeh effect). In this post I have used the following equipment: Cannon 1000D DLSR, Canon 18-55mm Kit lens, Tamron 70-300mm lens, Joby Gorilla Tripod, Simpex 1200 standard tripod. Please note that the aperture has been opened up completely for all the photos, mostly f/5.6.

Now several years old, the Canon 40D is a prosumer level camera produced by Canon. There have since been a number of revisions of the 40D, with the current model being the Canon 60D, however the 40D is still a very competent camera and stands up well to time. The Canon 40D is a 10 megapixel camera which is 2 megapixels more than its predecessor, the Canon 30D. Weighing 740 grams and with a magnesium alloy body construction, it certainly feels like a tough camera, although as with any expensive digital equipment, it’s not something advisable to drop, at any distance.
The Canon 40D has been around for a while now, launched in 2007, but it is still an excellent camera capable of taking excellent photos. This video review examines the various capabilities of the Canon 40D, covering build and image quality as well as a comparison between the more up-to-date Canon 60D.
