London has many great locations to take a decent photograph. After a day of exploring London I’ve put together a collection of some of the best places and example photos taken at each location.
I used a Canon 1DS Mark 1 digital SLR, with a Canon 17-40mm L lens for the majority of photos, I also used a tripod which was very handy once it started getting dark. It’s possible to balance a camera on flat surfaces a lot of the time, however this isn’t always the case.
In this article I will cover a couple of techniques on how to take photos at night. This includes: How to take photos in low light, how to take photos with both the subject and the background brightly illuminated, how to take photos of moving objects (traffic lights at night) and how to take photos of lights (the bokeh effect). In this post I have used the following equipment: Cannon 1000D DLSR, Canon 18-55mm Kit lens, Tamron 70-300mm lens, Joby Gorilla Tripod, Simpex 1200 standard tripod. Please note that the aperture has been opened up completely for all the photos, mostly f/5.6.

Now several years old, the Canon 40D is a prosumer level camera produced by Canon. There have since been a number of revisions of the 40D, with the current model being the Canon 60D, however the 40D is still a very competent camera and stands up well to time. The Canon 40D is a 10 megapixel camera which is 2 megapixels more than its predecessor, the Canon 30D. Weighing 740 grams and with a magnesium alloy body construction, it certainly feels like a tough camera, although as with any expensive digital equipment, it’s not something advisable to drop, at any distance.
The Canon 40D has been around for a while now, launched in 2007, but it is still an excellent camera capable of taking excellent photos. Finding the right place to take your photos can take a bit of research. Timing is also very important as a sunrise or sunset can have a dramatic effect on the composition. So, here are a few locations that I’ve found offer great views of New York, London, Hong Kong and Florence.
Cheap, light and portable with decent image quality makes this lens an attractive option
Not quite classed as a telephoto lens, but with a greater focal range than most standard lenses, the Tamron 55-200mm is a good all purpose addition to your kit bag. Tamron produce lenses for a number of camera manufacturers, and this lens is available with either a Canon, Nikon or Sony fitting.
