With a weight of 755g, the Nikon 17-55mm is a standard zoom lens. A good all rounder offering a decent focal range at a manageable size.

When I started using this lens I realised just how bad my current lenses were. This really is sharp, quick to focus, and going down to f/2.8, very fast.
Holding it in your hand, you realise immediately the difference between this, and a consumer lens. It's heavy, solid, and very well put together. Even the lens hood feels very well made.
Lke most lenses, it does suffer from a bit of barrel distortion, but this is corrected automatically within Lightroom 3. Similarly, there is a degree of Cyan/Red Chromatic Abberation in the corners at 17-20mm, corrected in LR by sliding the Cyan/Red correction down to about -20. Over 50mm, bright and contrasty areas in the corners display some Blue/Yellow CA, corrected by a +8 value in LR. LR3 lens profile automatically corrects these.
This is my workhorse lens on my D300s. It's a perfect combination.
